Around Bukit Asri Lodge in East Bali
-
Bukit Asri Lodge in East Bali is centrally located in the real Bali. Balinese culture can be found nearby; 10 walking minutes away one can find the magnificent "Pura Bukit". This authentic Balinese temple belongs to the "Puri" (royal palace) of Amlapura, seat of the old aristocratic rulers of Karangasem. About the temple, that is a favourite spot for meditation, goes an old legend that your guide will happily explain to you during a visit.
Further up the mountain, a steep car trip of 15 mins., is the "Lempuyang Luhur", a Hindu temple with a magnificent view on the sea and the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. The nature in East Bali is overwhelming; you can admire different great views on the way on the slopes of the "Gunung Seraya" (untouched jungle). In the morning or late afternoon one can make great walks in the direct area.
Somewhat further away is the "Pura Lempuyang" at a height of appr. 1100 meters. We recommend a visit early in the morning and be prepared for a stiff climb. The reward for this excursion is a temple with a great view on the "Gunung Agung" (3142 meters) and meetings with monkeys in their natural habitat.

In Amlapura you can visit "Maskerdam"; this is the palace of the old rulers of Bali, the Djelantiks, from Karangasem. South of Amlapura you can find "Ujung", a beautiful water palace and north of Amlapura is "Tirtagangga", the second water palace. Both palaces were used by the Djelantiks as weekend "retreats".
At "Bugbug", on the way to Candidasa, a 20 min. drive is White Sand Beach (Pasir Putih), an idyllic, semi-closed bay with white sand where can be swum and relaxed.
Somewhat further to the south, close to Candidasa, is Tenganan, a "Bali Aga" village where old traditions are cherished as much as possible. A visit is very worthwhile. There are different types of home-industries. Candidasa itself is a pleasant stop for lunch or dinner and there are different kinds of shops as well.
In short, a visit to authentic East Bali is a must when you're in Bali!
